Temporary Strainer

Temporary Strainer

(OP)
I used to see the conical temporary strainer install before the permanent strainer (Wye Strainer). Is it necessary to use conical temporary strainer only? How about the idea to use fine screen in the Wye strainer's body for temporary and replace to the permanent screen after start up?

What is the benefit to use conical temporary strainer (compare to Wye strainer)? Please advise.

RE: Temporary Strainer

If it is to trap weld flux and other debris then you can use some coarse screens even with wye strainers initially. The reason for conical strainers may be that they offer least resistance to the pump when the screen is removed at a later date.

My practice is to put a mesh near the suction flange and removing it once I circulate the system for 1 hour.
