Detecting temperature gradient

Detecting temperature gradient

(OP)
Basically I am looking for a device that will detect a rise in temperature within a specific time interval.
Our existing arrangement is a purpose built card with a K-type thermocouple input and a single on/ff input to the main PLC. This purpose built card is now becoming obsolete, hence the need for the new unit.

Obviously we could use a thermocouple card, read the real-time temp to the PLC and write a new block of programme around this. I want to avoid changes to the PLC programme, so a simple module unit would be ideal.

Are there any simple programmable units out there that could do this?

Appreciate any help.
Speedy
