Solidworks numbering system
Solidworks numbering system
(OP)
Does anyone out there use a seperate program to give them a number for a particular part?
We have particular numbers for each part and depending on what it is the number is different.
Example: Hardware = 50xxxx
Assemblies = 60xxxx
It would be nice to have a program that is an add-in to solidworks so that when you say I am creating a part for "hardware" it should give me the next number in line for "hardware".
Just wondering if anyone knows of such a program or if we have to have a VB guy come in to program it for us.

RE: Solidworks numbering system
Our PDM system generates drawing numbers and filenames automatically. It does this by intercepting SolidWorks disk accesses.
Do not do this.
Our PDM people do not mind that they have messed up insertion in place, but we mind. The process has no flexibility whatsoever.
Is generating numbers yourselves really that difficult?

But we do have to interrupt someone with what they are doing to get the next number in line.
and when she is not here we have to wait to get that number.
just trying to find a more streamline approach.

RE: Solidworks numbering system
Part numbers should not tell you anyting about that part. It should be a unique identifier and nothing else. The description can be used to describe the part.
The reason is this:
Say your part part numbers begin with P
and your assembly part numbers begin with A
and your hardware part numbers begin with H.
Now, say you design an assembly, so you give it an AXXX part number.
Now due to some sort of advancement (mfg process, materials, whatever) you are able to combine that assembly into a SINGLE part to save $. Form, fit, and function are identical to the original assembly, but now it is a part.....
so....
Now do you go back and rename your AXXX part number into PXXX? That would mean you need to update ALL of the prints and documentation that use that part number!!! Not a very good use of time.
No matter how smart you make your part number system, eventually, the smartness will be more of a hinderance due to the changes that innevitably will occur.

I think we will have to evalute some programs that will work the way we want it to.
We are considering the Access database since we already have the software.
Thanks
