Stainless Steel Pipe on Galvanized Steel Supports

Stainless Steel Pipe on Galvanized Steel Supports

Stainless Steel Pipe on Galvanized Steel Supports

(OP)
Are there any concerns about laying stainless steel (types 304 and 316) piping systems directly on galvanized steel supports in a high humidity, US Gulf Coast facility?  Some have expressed concerns about the possibility of somewhat severe galvanic corrosion occurring.

RE: Stainless Steel Pipe on Galvanized Steel Supports

Another concern is Solid Metal Embrittlement of the austentic stainless steel caused by the zinc, highly dependent on temperature.

As for galvanic corrosion, the couple between the stainless and galvanized steel favors corrosion on the galvanized material.

Trace elements in the galvanized coating, aluminum, lead, tin, bismuth, cadium, nickel, magnesium and copper could effect the degradation of the stainless. Prime western zinc used in hot dipped galvanizing is 98% zinc, 2% alloying.

I always disliked this as there was rusting all over, particularly when the pipes are clamped. I wrapped nitrile rubber gasket material around the pipe but clamping became difficult.

RE: Stainless Steel Pipe on Galvanized Steel Supports

The supports will rust.  The rust will trap impurities and moisture.  You will get crevice corrosion of the stainless.

I always liked solid HDPE blocks for pipe supports.

Corrosion never sleeps, but it can be managed.
