Tar to protect Galv steel

Tar to protect Galv steel

I need to embed a Galvanized Tube steel section ib concrete.
If a coat it with a layer of tar, is it good or bad??(to further protect it from rust)

RE: Tar to protect Galv steel

Embed the pipe without any coating.
If you have a high probability of steel corroding in the concrete, galvanize the steel.  Or use some other method to "short circuit" the corrosion process.

RE: Tar to protect Galv steel

Inside the concrete, the steel tube will not rust (except on the inside if exposed to the air), if the cement content is reasonable. The problem is where the tube is exposed to the air.

A layer of tar will mean that the tube is not gripped by the concrete, and the tube could slip, if that is a consideration.

Galvanised steel needs an additive to the concrete, but I have forgotten the name.

More information and a more detailed description of the application is required to offer further advice.

RE: Tar to protect Galv steel

Until about 25 years ago steel pipes, electrical conduit, etc. (plain and galvanized) that were embedded in industrial concrete slabs were routinely "coated and wrapped" with asphalt impregnated fabric. There were detailed specs on what to use and how to do this. The practice was stopped as a waste of time and money for the reasons given by SperlingPE & StephenA.

RE: Tar to protect Galv steel

StevenA:

I've never heard of using an additive in the concrete because of embedded galvanized steel.  They have been using galvanized rebar for years and as far as I know, I've never heard of any problems.  Can you followup on your comment?

I myself have not heard about it that's y I threw it to this forum. Actually the client is also a PE(do not know which discipline) therefore trying to listen to him. He placed a carport. it is made of Galv. TS 2x2x12 GA. columns and base rail. He wants to place a conc floor due to which base rail(TS 2x2x 12 GA. Galv.) will also be burried in conc floor. He wants to further place something on TS so that it is protected. As such this base rail is not a structural component of floor slab. From discussion above, it looks to me that TS shold not be treated with anything?

RE: Tar to protect Galv steel

What is the purpose of the TS in the floor slab?

Dear CTW
Nothing.
Carport is built with TS columns. The bottom of all columns on each side is welded with Horizontal TS (base rail). The client wants to place conc floor inside the carport. Due to this floor the base rail and some bottom portion of Ts col will be burried in floor conc.

RE: Tar to protect Galv steel

OK.  I was thinking there were going to be additional embedded TS in the slab, but now I understand.  No need to treat the TS with anything since it is galvanized.
