Stainless Steel Section Properties

Stainless Steel Section Properties

Stainless Steel Section Properties

(OP)
Does anyone know where I can find the properties of stainless steel sections? I'm particularly interested in small sizes (i.e., 2x2) and 41ksi steels.

TIA,
Imagineer

RE: Stainless Steel Section Properties

Find a manufacturer, such as Ryerson, on the Internet. They will probably have a catalog of shapes.

RE: Stainless Steel Section Properties

A good sourse of technical info can be obtained from the Australian Stainless Steel Devlopment Association (http://www.assda.asn.au/). In particular their technical publication "Australian Stainless - Reference Manual" is a very good reference.

With respect to design guidlines I would reccomend "Euroinox Code for Design of Stainless Steel" this is alos available through ASSDA.

Follow-up:
Ryerson, etc. do have stainless steel structural shapes, they just don't list their properties other than dimensions.
Looked at NiDI, didn't find anything pertinant. Lots of good info on chemical composition, and chemical and corrosion resistance. But no strength properties.
Looked at the ASSDA website but because I am not a member, didn't find specifics. My question on the Australian reference manual is how does it translate to the United States (i.e, metric to english and available shapes).

RE: Stainless Steel Section Properties

With respect to the strength properties I would expect that most stainless steels are manufactured to similar properties irrespective of Country of origin. I certainly know that the stainless available her in Australia (eg 304, 316, 2205 Duplex) is very similar to other materials available in Europe as they are all specified in terms of an ISO standard. I can't say the same about the US? If you would like some material properties I can fax them to you out of the Australian reference manual. Let me know what grades you are after. (thoare@ozemail.com.au)

With respect to available section sizes and shapes this is very much a local thing. My experience across Australia, South East Asia and Britan is that each industry has differening standard section shape. I can certainly give further details for Australia if you give me an idea of what you are after. eg rolled sections, closed sections CHS or RHS, flat bars, wires etc.

RE: Stainless Steel Section Properties

Go to SSINA.com, the stainless steel industry site, download publications for free or go to a member's website, links are available. The members both publish data and can answer emails with specific questions. The Q&A provided by SSINA just goes to NiDI, so I wouldn't bother using it. You will only get information that's beneficial for promoting nickel bearing stainless steels, which would exclude the less expensive options.
