multiple users trying not to use the same part numbers

multiple users trying not to use the same part numbers

we are 4 users working on the same boat using similar sequental part numbers through vault.  because we may create a few parts before adding them to the vault we are having problems with part duplication.  at the moment we are passing round a piece of paper and ticking off the part numbers each of us use but its not ideal.  is there anything out there that would help?

RE: multiple users trying not to use the same part numbers

Supposing we use computer network it is possible to apply shared Excel file with part numbers.

weve tried sharing excel sheets but its not really live, ie, you have to open the sheet do your thing and close the sheet to update it.  ideally we would like to have a program running in the background that we can pop up and everyone else can see the changes made as you type them.  we have looked into getting something written for vault but cant justify the expense...

RE: multiple users trying not to use the same part numbers

In the past, we had printed out sheets of sequential part numbers (100 per sheet), and each person got one sheet.  When they assigned a part number to a component, they wrote it on the sheet, and then entered the number and other data into our system.  When the sheet was full, they would turn it into the person that kept the main book, and would get another sheet of blank numbers.  It worked really well.

RE: multiple users trying not to use the same part numbers

gib2j,
I am convinced you needn'd close the shared file. Just save that and other users must update this open file i.e. accept new modifications.Of course you must set file as shared in advance, beeing the first user.

thanks madmango, thats pretty much what were doing at the moment.

franco1, it apears that there is no save comand and the only way for another user to save the file is to close it

RE: multiple users trying not to use the same part numbers

gib2j,
we have got probably as an older Excel as '97 , haven't you. Older versions have no possibility to work with shared file.
