Calculating Steam (Water) Pick-Up

Calculating Steam (Water) Pick-Up

Calculating Steam (Water) Pick-Up

(OP)
Needed to calculate the water pick-up in slurry that is
heated using direct steam injection (so I can reduce the
amount of water in the slurry appropriately to accomodate
the additional water being injected in the steam).
Steam (SAT) = 120psi
batch.
T1=140F slurry
TF=190F slurry
470LBS product (assume WATER for calculations because of
high water content

Can somebody help me out and double check my calculation
of 50LBS pickup.

RE: Calculating Steam (Water) Pick-Up

From a quick enthalpy and mass balance I get 22 lb pick-up.

can you show your calculations?

RE: Calculating Steam (Water) Pick-Up

Considering just water, a mass-and-enthalpy balance with data from tables, shows:
                                                      Enthalpy, Btu/lb

Original water, W, at 140 F:                         108
Saturated picked up steam, S, at 120 psia:   1191
Final mix, W+S = 470 lb, at 190 F:                158

W = 470 (1191-158)/(1191-108) = 448 lb

Thus S = 22 lb.
