Interior load bearing walls

Suppose you have a wood stud interior bearing wall.  In checking to make sure the stud is adequate to support the axial load, it is also required to check the 5 psf lateral loading on the stud.
My question is this - Is it appropriate to include a wind duration factor (or any duration factor) when checking the bending of the stud due to the 5 psf lateral load?  Is that 5 psf a wind load, or a load of, say, someone leaning on the wall?

RE: Interior load bearing walls

I believe it is sort of "every kind of load" - takes into account internal pressure variations due to wind behavior and also lateral loads from shelving and/or impact from someone pushing, falling or leaning on the wall...so I would not use the wind DLF for it.

RE: Interior load bearing walls

I agree with JAE.

RE: Interior load bearing walls

The IBC and UBC define the 5 psf as a live load.  So a duration factor of 1 would apply.

RE: Interior load bearing walls

Good point, Taro - the code obviously defines it.

Thanks all.  BOCA also defines it as a live load under Section 1606.9 Interior walls and partitions.
