PDMWorks: Number of Files Per Folder
PDMWorks: Number of Files Per Folder
(OP)
We have been advised that it is best to layout the vault using many folders, instead of using a few folders containing many files. What does SolidWorks recommend to be the maximum number of files contained in a folder?

RE: PDMWorks: Number of Files Per Folder
We move every released drawing, part and assembly in to a “Production Released” folder when it is done. We have thousands of them and never had any problems. The PDM is still very quick, but not as quick as when we had hundreds.
One problem is the number of files in your working directory. In the beginning I never deleted anything in my working directory. I had 1,873 files in my working directory. It took me about 7 minutes to open a file that should have taken 3 seconds. Once I started with a clean working directory that same file took less than 3 seconds to open.

RE: PDMWorks: Number of Files Per Folder
The main thing to keep in mind regarding PDMW is that it operates on a "flat" file structure. In other words, any folders you may have in your vault are just for your benefit, and to keep things visually organized. They have very little effect on how PDMW stores its data. Bradley and Scott are correct; there is not a specific limit on how many files per folder, but as your vault grows in size, it will take longer to do the tree rebuilding and structure validation. That will be true regardless of your folder structure. Bottom line, you can make the folder structure as simple or as nested as you want -- whatever makes sense to you and your company.
