Combination structural support/Linear bearing

Combination structural support/Linear bearing

(OP)
I'm designing a lifting device with about 10 feet of vertical motion and with a load capacity of about 2 tons.  I would like to use the four support columns themselves as linear bearing guides for the vertical motion. I'm envisioning C-channel columns constraining roller or slide bearings.  Any ideas on the best way to find or fabricate the columns?  Any problems with the idea?

Thanks!
Steve

SBMerrick,

Your describing a fork lift mast if you want only 2 supports. If you need 4 supports use (2) masts.

Thanks for the quick response, Bill.  Yes, I'd thought of forklift masts too, but couldn't find a source on line. I found plenty of bearings, but no source for the c-channel guides.  Any guidance as to potential sources would be appreciated.

Thanks again,
Steve

RE: Combination structural support/Linear bearing

I used to work for Allis-Chalmers where the rough terrain fork lift was built. We built masts up to 32' height with 5000 lb capacity with I believe 4 sections. They used some specialty rolled channels. I'm not sure where they got those products. I'm sure your local service center can give you guidance of who supplies this type of material and what they can get. You're are probably stuck with using stock sizes of channel because of low usage.

I hope this helps,
Bill

Winkle is one source for forklift mast and bearings.

Thanks, Barry.  I tried to Google Winkle, and the closest match I found was for Winkle Industries who makes electromagnetic crane attachments.  Is this the right company? If not, oculd you post a link?

Thanks!
Steve

The Winkle bearings look ideal for many of my applications.  Thanks for the tip!
