Short Anchor Bolt Solutions

Short Anchor Bolt Solutions

Short Anchor Bolt Solutions

(OP)
We have run into a situation where several footings were cast too low and now there is not enough thread left for the nuts to have the proper bite.  I would really like to avoid extending the base plates and drilliong and epoxing new bolts.  Could somebody guide me to information about anchor bolt couplers or welding anchor bolts directly to the base plate.

RE: Short Anchor Bolt Solutions

You should be able to get hexagonal couplers to suit standard bolt sizes. However these are 3-4 diameters long so you might not have enough room to get them in. You might be able to site weld an extension but maintaining weld quality could be a problem.

Are thes bolts required to resist tension loading?

RE: Short Anchor Bolt Solutions

Try the AISC site www.aisc.org; they should be able to provide you with a detail for welding an extension or adding a coupler.

RE: Short Anchor Bolt Solutions

Are the bolts weldable material?  You might be able to weld an extension on to the rod.  I don't think A307 bolts are considered weldable and I'm not sure about F1554 but I'd guess they are.

Try this link to AISC's FAQ Section.
