Constant Torque Vector

Constant Torque Vector

Constant Torque Vector

(OP)
I have a constant torque application using a 10hp Abb motor 1800 rpm inverter duty. Model.  4d215thtl7726apr152 460v 3 p code M. Design A. Tenv. 1-50hz constant torque.  13.5 full load amps driven by a Hitachi SJ300 11KVA(15HP).

This is going to drive a cable wench which will be used as a conveyor belt take up device.  This will replace a hydraulic cylinder.  The motor will need to maintain a near constant belt pull near 0 rpm. The motor will be operating at 50% of it's rated torque.

The plan now is to run the drive in vector mode at 60HZ command speed and set the torque limit parameters to adjust belt pull.  The thought is that motor torque will drop some when then motor reaches 0 rpm but should settle fairly quickly.

The accel should be less than 5 rad-sec^2.

Anyone have any experience with this type of application or thoughts on it?  It seems like a DC motor may be better suited for this but there are political reasons to use AC.

RE: Constant Torque Vector

Your answer lies entirely with the drive technology.  The motor is suitable for this service.

There are drives out there that will do this job easily.  (ABB's ACS800 is one of those).  Whether the Hitachi unit you have is capable or not is for someone more familiar with Hitachi to determine.

RE: Constant Torque Vector

Barry1961,
We use these types of winches on several of our underground conveyor belts in the mining industry.  They are called "Constant tension winches".  Manufacturers include DBT America, Continental and others.  Maybe you can use what they have or talk to their engineers to find out some of the "quirks" with this application.
Good luck,
Dave
