Crankshaft Run Out

Crankshaft Run Out

Crankshaft Run Out

(OP)
Hi,

I am more electrical than mechanical, I have an application which need to be modified, the current machine checks for axial and radial runout on a crankshatf,  specifically on something that is called time gear or time cogwheel (sorry but english is not my native language) the case is that this cogwheel has several teeth which are coming out of the vise with several defects like if it hasn't gone through this vise (you can see on a tooth that is not uniform or terminated). Can someone explain what exactly is axial/radial runout on a cogwheel crakshaft and how is measured. Thanks

JM

RE: Crankshaft Run Out

I think this is normally called the timing gear in the US.

Try a websearch.  I ran across several sites with information.  One actually showed a movie (note:  this is aviation related, but presumably the same):

It appears you would rotate the shaft, and measure how far in/out or back/forth the surfaces move with a dial indicator.

RE: Crankshaft Run Out

For radial runout you measure the eccentricity of the shaft, or gear. For axial runout you measure the axial 'swash' of a disc, so you need to define the radius at which you are measuring it.
