Slow drawing open questions.

Slow drawing open questions.

(OP)
We are having problems opening drawing files, it is taking as much as 15-30 minutes to open a drawing.  All files are local, with a flat file structure.  The main assy has 530 components, 110 unique parts, 15-20 top level mates.  We are trying to load lightweight, but SW is opening each file.  I have noticed that if I have SW shutdown, and browse to the file and open from Windows it will open lightweight, in a near instant, but in drart mode.  When I clidk on high quality view it will begin to load the parts as above and resolve them.  I this the best I can hope for?  We are looking at a dedicated server with pdm works, but that will not address these problems.  If we load drawings lightweight must they come in in draft mode?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Slow drawing open questions.

What are your computer specs since your opening locally?

Do you have any complicated geometry? - Surfaces, Helixes, etc...

Do an assembly statistic to get your exact top-level mates, part, and components.

What is your thereshold set for?

What options do you have set in your tools\options for "Large assembly mode", & "Performance"? These settings could make a difference.

What version of SW?

Yes, when you set it to High Quality it will require you to resolve the files.

Maybe you should look at doing a detached drawing after the drawing is completed.

Dual Xeon 2.4 ghz, 2 gig ram, quadro fx3000 video card (256MB), 40 gig scsi hard drive.  No surfaces, (one major component is a large shelled box with fillets, Part was created from a join feature.
Total number of components 841, unique parts 197, subassys 87, resolved components 765, supresseed componnets 76, lightweight 0, top level mates 45, top level components 16
max depth 5.

Large assy mode was set at 500 now set at 200.
auto activate la mode prompt
check out of date light weight components dont check
auto load compnonets light weight

display
remove detail during zpr
hid all planes asex shetches, curves annotations etc.
display edges in shaded mode

drawings
automatically hide components on view creation.

Thanks on the answer for high quality I had been led to believe we could get high quality on lightweight.

We are starting to use detatched drawings.

Will a light weight draft view show the alternate position views?  I may just work that way until we do a final print.

RE: Slow drawing open questions.

Try turning hyperthreading off ... SW has had problems when that is activated. I don't know about latest version ... & you did not say what version you are using.

You mentioned SCSI drives, what RAID array are you running? I don't know much about them but have read that they can actually slow things down if not properly configured.

Are you running an anti-virus with "auto-protect" enabled? If so try disabling it temporarily to see if performance increases.

In the assemblies which take a long time to open, have all the parts & sub-assemblies been previously converted to your current version of SW?

Are your Tools > Options > Performance & Image Quality set appropriately?

How do I turn off hyperthreading?

RE: Slow drawing open questions.

Good question ... haven't done it for so long I am having trouble remembering. I think it is in the BIOS setup.

RE: Slow drawing open questions.

Yes ... BIOS setup > Advanced > CPU configuration > Hyperthreading ... Enable/Disable

Can't remeber too much about this but perhaps other forum members might.
