AF-E-411 MATERIAL

Can someone tell me who manufactures AF-E-411 plastic?

RE: AF-E-411 MATERIAL

Oy.  Haven't heard of that stuff for quite awhile.  I think you can get it from Parker, and maybe Apple Rubber, contact their custom compounding shops.  You could also contact EG&G Wright Components, I used to buy a solenoid valve from them with an AFE-411 seat; they may be able to point you towards a supplier.  Moog also supplies similar stuff, and probably mixes their own rubber.

Ah, yes.  A quick Google search opens up PSI systems' website (they make prop tanks for the fluids you are probably interested in),

http://www.psi-pci.com/additional_facilities.htm

which lists AFE411 as a specialty compound.  That'll be $5 for the search, or spot me a beer at the clubroom down the hall...

Just out of curiosity, what kind of rocket fuel are you trying to seal?

Thanks for the leads. We're sealing hydrazine for a thruster valve. There's a cold one waiting for you in the clubroom!

RE: AF-E-411 MATERIAL

Sip...ahh!

Thought so.  Have you talked to the customer about using an EPDM compound?  Unless you are sealing Aerozine-50, or one of the methyl hydrazines, EPDM seals quite nicely.  There is a book out there called _Hydrazine and Its Derivatives_ by Eckhardt Schmidt, of the old Rocket Research Co. where I worked too many years.  I think it was published by McGraw-Hill?  The book is thick, but has a lot of good info. on hydrazine compatibility with various seal and container materials.  Parker may also be able to point you to some of their proprietary blends.  But, as I recall, good old Parker compund E515-80 was bulletproof as a hydrazine seal, at least for static seals.

Finally, if you are locked into the AFE411 due to spec. compliance, make sure the formulator is careful about the silicone/silica content.  Depending on who this thruster valve is for it may or may not be important, AFE411 can put a lot of dissolved silicon/silicone into solution in the 'zine, which can go downstream and poison catalysts, or plug small fluid delivery tubes.

Wow, just checked amazon.com - $440!  You may want to check with the librarian at RRC, now Aerojet, and see if they can loan you a copy.
