Code weld per ASME IX
Code weld per ASME IX
(OP)
Is spot-welding of nameplate on a ASME VIII Div 1 pressure relief valve considered a code weld?
UG-136 is not clear as far as nameplate attachment is concerned.
Please share your opinion. Thanks.

RE: Code weld per ASME IX
See paragraph e) the nameplate shall be attached to the vessel or pad, bracket or structure which is welded, brazed or soldered directly to the vessel.
I would take this to mean spot welding a nameplate to a safety valve requires a qualified welding procedure and welder..
RE: Code weld per ASME IX
Quoted:
The procedure used in welding nonpressure-bearing
attachments which have essentially no load-carrying
function (such as extended heat transfer surfaces, insulation support pins, etc.), to pressure parts shall meet the following requirements.
(1) When the welding process is manual, machine,
or semiautomatic, procedure qualification is required in
accordance with Section IX.
(2) When the welding is any automatic welding process
performed in accordance with a Welding Procedure
Specification (in compliance with Section IX as far as
applicable), procedure qualification testing is not
required.
Unquoted.
It is immaterial what welding process is used: whether fusion or resistance welding. Any welding to the pressure envelope is considered to be equally important with regard to records and qualifications. NDE will be different only.
And I would like to draw your attention to UW-28 (a):
"Each procedure of welding that is to be followed
in construction shall be recorded in detail by the manufacturer."

in my previous answer I assumed that you weld the nameplate directly to the shell. If you weld the nameplate to the bracket not directly to the shell that will be a non-code weld.

It is my opinion that the Code will allow you to tack weld the name plate of the valve with just a the proper WPS.
the Code will allow the safety valve as PART and not part of the vessel. The safety valve mfr or assembler will have the responsibility here.
