PE Exam Approved Calculator

PE Exam Approved Calculator

(OP)
I have applied for the PE Exam to be held in April.  I have noticed that my everday calculator, Texas Instruments TI-85, is on the list of banned calculators due to its text editing and networking capabilities.  The problem for me is that I have become so attached to using this calculator.  I often use the solver function, conversion factors, interpolation feature, and the large screen to see the full equation as it is entered.  My question is as follows:

Is there a calculator that is approved by the PE board with the above features, but not the text editing or networking features?

I think I should get used to a new calculator before I sit for my exam.  The sooner, the better.  Please let me know if anyone has been in a similar situation.  Thank you.

RE: PE Exam Approved Calculator

i have the same problem as you i love my ti-85. i use most of the functions you mention. i honestly beliweve the large screen is the most useful for checking you entered the correct #s. i used the ti-30 IIs.

it at least has a two line dislay. it does not have the rest of the features though. honestly i did not need most of those on pe though

good luck

RE: PE Exam Approved Calculator

pcronin - You will not be able to use any calculator with text editing or networking features. Here is a link to the national board's web site on this subject:

In particular, take a look at items #3 and #4.

The test is about the concepts of understanding, setting up, problem solving, and having confidence in your own judgement - not about the application of technology to "deliver" an answer.

I applaud your decision to "bite the bullet" and become familiar, in advance, with a "legal" calculator.
