Oxygen-less Water???

Oxygen-less Water???

Oxygen-less Water???

(OP)
Here's a clip from an AP article today that struck me funny:

Quote (RichardLewis):

Scientists were especially interested in this site, dubbed "Shipwreck D," because the Black Sea's unique, oxygen-less water leaves everything on the bottom mostly intact.

Oxygen-less water... Er, sounds like another term for diatomic hydrogen to me

RE: Oxygen-less Water???

The same thing happens at the bottom of Lake Superior, and IIRC Clive Cussler talked about it in Raise the Titanic... (Which is an interesting book, Esp now that we know where and what state she's in.)

RE: Oxygen-less Water???

...which brings up another point, though... there are plenty of people (even in engineering) who believe that a fish "breathes" by splitting oxygen from H2O molecules somehow (rather than by separating dissolved O2 from the water).  I've even heard people talking about using gill-like materials to separate water into O and H to run fuel cells...

RE: Oxygen-less Water???

I was looking for an answer to that, online, because I was sure that there were ocean pressures high enough, when I stumbled upon this:

"gaseous hydrogen. At room temperature (above -253°C or 20 K, to be exact) hydrogen is gaseous independent of the pressure."
http://www.hynet.info/hydrogen_e/glossary/intro_00...

RE: Oxygen-less Water???

That's about the atmospheric boiling point. In fact the critical temperature of hydrogen is 33K or -240oC, and for oxygen it is 154.6K, or -118.6oC.

As an aside, if it were not for the extraordinary behaviour of water in cold climates, ie, forming an insulating layer of floating ice, the coldest water would be at the bottom and lakes would freeze from the bottom up destroying most aquatic life.

TheTick is right, how far can one be adrift and away from the thread's original leitmotiv ?

Anyhoo...

Reposting facts without any editorial commentary:

•The lack of oxygen refers to the amount of dissolved gaseous oxygen, no the oxygen that is part of the H2O molecule.

•H2 can not exist as a liquid under the conditions found at the bottom of the Black Sea.

RE: Oxygen-less Water???

I have somewhere an alarmist warning about all the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide -- it dissolves metals, it doesn't support human life, governments are stockpiling large amounts, it's a major component of exhaust gases, etc.  I'll have to dig it out.

RE: Oxygen-less Water???

you forgot to mention that:
 * it's one of the primary chemicals used in nuclear power generation
 * it is so widespread that large quantities can be found in every child
 * inhalation can be fatal

RE: Oxygen-less Water???

Don't forget the severe burns the gaseous state can cause and the tissue damage the solid state can cause.

RE: Oxygen-less Water???

I would have thought that any substance at 20 degrees K would cause tissue damage (hydrogen is always a gas above that temperature)

sure, but they're talking about dihydrogen monoxide.

RE: Oxygen-less Water???

You folks are making me thirsty with all this talk of water. :D

Better than the alternative.
