I would like to harden 416 stailess steel, what would be the right process and temperatures for this

RE: heat treating 416 steel

You need to figure out what are your loads and stresses that the part is going to see and then decide what heat treat is necessary.

Refer to the ASM Metals Handbook volume 2 for suggested temperatures.  You still need to determine the properties required before commencing.

Good Luck

RE: heat treating 416 steel

losochos: There are many variables in heat-treating, so it's hard to be specific because you have not provided any details (part geometry, type of furnace, etc.). But generally speaking, 416SS is austenitized at 1700-1850 deg F, oil-quenched, then tempered at 1050-1125 deg F. If you use an atmospheric furnace be SURE to double wrap the part or you won't like the result.
