Percussion Drilling

Percussion Drilling

(OP)
Can anyone describe to me the process of percussion drilling with a laser?  I would like to know if machines
set up to do this have to change focus during the drilling.
In other words, how deep can a laser drill when percussion drilling if the focus is kept constant?  I have a 30 watt 200kW peak pulse power lasermarker that I am setting up to mark parts, but I need to convince my customer that I can't accidentally "drill" through their part if the XY scanner
mirror motors fail, (thus leaving the beam in one location for a period of time, with no change in the focus.
I haven't found a way to make the beam "be still" to simulate failure, so I'm looking to find out what people who use percussion drilling have to do to get it to work.
Any help is appreciated.
