Insert Object

Guys and Gals,
Can't insert a tiff image in SW. Comes up with a icon everytime I try to insert it into a drawing. And yes, the icon box is unchecked. I think it's a bug, because it worked before.

Help!

RE: Insert Object

Hi macduff,
I think you have to start a new sketch, then insert. It is the only way I can get it to work.

Hello ctopher,
New sketch or new view? I tried creating an empty view and does not work. Even tried lock view focus on it. still nothing.

Also, I inserted (insert, picture, from file)the image into Excel and was sucessful. Then copy and pasted into SW, also sucessful. But what happens when I try to edit the image later on........It says that it is a static image and can't be modified. I need to have this an option because Engineering changes that might happen down the road.

See example:

Thanks,

RE: Insert Object

In a drawing you should be able to use copy/paste to insert the file.  This always works for me without issue.

RE: Insert Object

Insert into new sketch in a part is the only way I can work it. Maybe someone else knows? Tick, CBL, Scott??

RE: Insert Object

SW2003 SP5.1

I just did a drag-and-drop of a tiff into a part.  Worked fine.

RE: Insert Object

I usually do it rockguys way. I have never been able to insert any graphic into SW drawing using the "insert > object" method ... always end up with icon no matter what options are selected/deselected! Also can not do it from windows explorer ... it has to be from another program (XnView or Irfanview) with open window of the file I want to insert.

RE: Insert Object

Worked with a drawing, too.  Drawing was a bit different, though.  Image showed up in a sizeable sub-window.

ctopher,
Tried insert to a part sketch, same thing happens, Icon appears.

rockguy,
yes it works, but can't modify it once inserted. (see my last example hyperlink comment).

TheTick,
Nothering happen when I draged and dropped. The screen did flicker.

RE: Insert Object

The embedded Object has to be associated with a program on your system. If it isn't then it will come in as an ICON.

Maybe your file has lost it's associativity to the app. Redo the association and see if that helps.

RE: Insert Object

The icons are still associative, if I double click on mine (in the drawing) the file will open in its intended program.

RE: Insert Object

What do mean by modify??  You should be able to size the image using the drag handles.  If you want to edit the actual image content you will need the program that created the data.

RE: Insert Object

If you used the "cut & paste" method, the object will be embedded not linked, therefore you will not be able to activate the object by double clicking. You will have to modify the file in the original program & re-"cut & paste".

rockguy,
Yes, I do want to edit the actual image. But when I double click on it, it won't open the software.

Here's the error:

"Can not activate a static ActiveX object"

CorBlimeyLimey,
I think that's what I'm going to have to do. But wil I lose resolution down the road on the image?

Our old drawings are manual and scanned in to a tiff image and want to paste them into SW on our new company format(SW templates). We have imaging software to modify the drawings if need be, but do not want to lose image quality.

I have done this in the past and had no problems in SW until SW2004.

Can someone this this real quick in SW2005 for me, please?

All the best,

RE: Insert Object

If it's a TIF image you will not lose resolution. TIF is a "lossless" format.

RE: Insert Object

Of course the Tiff files is associative it's suppose to be, but if you want the Tiff to show up as an object vs. an icon you must have the tiff directly associated to a program. It's confusing but I have had to force this to work through the file types of windows.
