I am a complete newcomer to corrosion protection and am looking for some advice. I am involved in a project where a hydraulic connector connected a hose to a subsea 316 stainless structure. The stainless structure was mistakenly not connected to the main subsea structure cathodic protection system and had no protection of its own.
A locking ring which was part of the hydraulic connector degraded rapidly producing a blue substance which has been identified as Copper chloride hydroxide.
All parts of this connecter are supposed to be 316 stainless. My question is 'Could the above scenario happen or does there have to be other materials within the connector? '

Send the remains to be analysed so you know what you are dealing with. 316ss would only contain trace copper.
