Manual three jaw chuck with optical encoder

Manual three jaw chuck with optical encoder

Hi everyone,

This is my first post at eng-tips, so I hope I'm in the right place.  I am looking to either build my own or even better purchase a manual three jaw chuck for TIR gauging of castings.  Currently we chuck a part up, position an indicator on the feature we want to measure and manually/slowly rotate the part.  I would like to find a system that has a three jaw chuck attached to an encoder of some type so that I will be able to automate the data collection from the unit.  Has anyone seen something like this?  Sound reasonable?

Thanks,

Fred

If the part is going to rotate auotmatically will the spindle drive have feedback that you can use?

No, the part will be spun by hand.  This is a simple once or twice around to determine TIR across the parting line on a casting.

foundryqa,
Some years past when I was making pistons for a living, there was an apparatus called a Tallyround that did what you describe.  Very accurate and gave a good representation of the ellipse we wanted.  A bit pricy as I recall though.
