Codes and Standards

Codes and Standards

(OP)
I earned my PE license 2 years ago, but have never been in a situation that calls for stamped designs.  I'd like to find a firm where a PE is needed and valued. If I wanted to supervise HVAC designers, what codes and standards should I know?  Are there any other helpful design references I should have readily available?

RE: Codes and Standards

i would start getting familar with ASHRAE Standards and the International Mechanical Code & International Building Code.  Also the ashrae handbooks are a good reference.  Check out www.ashrae.org and go to the bookstore, they have all of their standards and handbooks, code books, design manuals etc.  good luck.

RE: Codes and Standards

I'd add to the list NFPA-90A, 92A, and often find 30 applicable... There's a lot to learn from the ASHRAE handbooks, but for more abbreviated HVAC, lean toward the latest Standard 55 (thermal comfort) and 62 (ventilation). Also see ACGIH industrial ventilation. But Step 1 would be to go to your local/state building code and find the standards that it references.

RE: Codes and Standards

For the offshore marine industry also review 46 CFR 58.01-45.  Many codes and standards are industry specific.
