I want to put a dimension of a circle as a foreshortened radius in a detailed view of a side, section view.

Can this be done and how, other than changing the properties of the dim and turning off lines?

Thanks for the help.

RE: foreshortened radius

Look in SolidWorks helptopics for "foreshortened radius", it's there.

For SW03 (not sure about other versions)...

1) Select your radius dim.
2) In the FeatureManager, select More Properties.
3) Enable Foreshortened Radius.

RE: foreshortened radius

Yes, it can be done.

Make sure the dim is displayed as radius (not diameter).
Then in the dim properties, there is a checkbox for Foreshortened radius.

MadMango beat me on the Submit button.

It is the same for SWx 2004 and 2005.

This does not work for a detail of a section view, unless I am missing something.  I am able to get it to work the way you mentioned and I knew that, but I can not get it to work for a detail of a section view.

RE: foreshortened radius

I just tried it on a detail of a section view and it works fine.

Since you are trying this on "a detail of a section view", I'm assuming you are using 2005.  My install is currently still the download version, not from CDs.

Is there anything else which may be different?
What do you specifically mean by "does not work"?  Is the option not available?  Grayed out?  Available and checked but does nothing?

I was about to test the admin install from CDs, may be able to find out if that makes a difference.

RE: foreshortened radius

While on this subject, is there a way to create a fore-shortened linear dimension to the center of the arc?

I am using 2003.  I can make a detal of a section, but not a section of a section.
The option is grayed out so I can not select it to tun off the diameter dim.

Thanks

RE: foreshortened radius

Chad, you need 2005 for this I believe.

I ran into this dilemma just yesterday!

My ham-handed solution was to turn off the Second dimension and extension lines (the ones pointing to the arc center) and typing "TO CENTER OF RADIUS" as a note on the dimension.

But as far as actually DOING what you asked...I dunno.

Just installed SW2005 an hour ago!

RE: foreshortened radius

ChadN,

I do not currently have 2003 installed to test.  It does work in 2004.  It sound like your problem is changing the diameter to a radius?

You can only forshorten radius dims (in any version, so far)
As a work around, you could try to go back to the part file and see if you can display the Feature dimension as a radius.  Then try to "Insert model items" for that specific feature in the detail view.  It may work

MElam,
I did try that and it works on the face that has the rad dim, but it does not come into the detail view.  I will just keep going with turning off some of the lines per with the properties.

Thanks
