corrosion inhibitor

(OP)
Please forgive me if this is a naive question:
Formaldehyde is described also as a corrosion inhibitor.
To what extent can it be used to protect alloys like 316L for HCl (hydrochloric) corrosion.
What kind of effective concentration would we be talking about?

RE: corrosion inhibitor

(OP)
YES, but to what extent is formaldehyde **actually** used to prevent stainless stell/Hastelloy from HCl corrosion?

RE: corrosion inhibitor

Sorry I have not replied but have been out of town for a few days.
I do not believe formaldehyde is used or could be used to protect SS from HCL. However, resins films produced from phenol/formaldehyde/epoxy are extremely resistant to water and non oxidising acids, HCL being one of them. They are used to coat the inside of aluminium drink cans as well as large steel drums by applying resin film to the metal skin and baking at high temperature, around 220 deg. C. (428 deg. F). They appear to be effective for these applications and should also be very effective against HCL.
Start by contacting your local phenol/formaldehyde resin producer.
