Extension Spring Calculations

Extension Spring Calculations

Extension Spring Calculations

(OP)
Does anyone know of an extension spring calculator available online?  I googled and found one that looked good but could not get it to work.  I have a decent compression spring calculator but it seems extension spring calculators are more difficult to find.

I'm interested in both overall spring calculations and end loop stress calculations.

I have no trouble doing the calculations manually to verify the calculator.  I would like a calculator to assist in optimizing a specific spring application.

Thank you in advance!

RE: Extension Spring Calculations

Extension spring has at least three additional complicating issues compared to compression springs.
1. The loop bending stresses, especially where there are dozens of standard loop configuration.
2. The matter of initial tension force, the same look alike springs can be designed with zero initial tension and up to some maximum that can be achieved.
3. The disadvantage of not being able to prestress the spring thereby, less force from an extension spring compared to a compression spring with the same number of active coils and wire dimensions.
