Testing 3 phase servo motor

Testing 3 phase servo motor

Testing 3 phase servo motor

(OP)
Greetings,
I want to test an Emerson 3 phase servo motor and don't have a spare drive available.  Can I connect this to a 3 phase line and run it as an induction motor at a fixed speed?
Thanx in advance, Steve

RE: Testing 3 phase servo motor

The short answer is No.  Without running it, here are some static tests

1)Shake the motor-there should be no rattles.

2) Spin the shaft by hand-it should turn smoothly.

3) Spin the shaft by hand with the motor up to your ear-there should be little to no sound.

4)Smell the motor-there should be no smell of burnt windings

5) Measure the three phase to phase resistances-they should be close to the same value.

6) Measure the three phase to phase voltages with an oscilloscope while turning the motor by hand.  The voltages should be "Sine Wave" shaped and approximately equal (this is hard to do-a flywheel on the motor shaft helps.

7) If the motor has Hall sensors,or an encoder/resolver, these need to be tested separately.

RE: Testing 3 phase servo motor

motor should be free when turning by hand and short two stator terminals together and now turn it. it will be like this all the time if shorted windings. put bolt in end of shaft and look at scope across two phases when turning by socket handle as smoothly as possible. usually feedback package goes first. can be tested if encoder or resolver.
