Wood to steel deck fastener

Wood to steel deck fastener

Wood to steel deck fastener

(OP)
I'm looking for screw fastener to be used in non-structural application of 3/4" plywood on top of 1-1/2", 20 gauge steel deck. A brand name, designation and other info would be appreciated.

RE: Wood to steel deck fastener

My suggestion would be to contact your local rep. for Hilti or Fastenal and have them recommend a fastener.  They can provide all the product data backup information you might need.

Check out Hilti's Kwik-Pro Self Drilling Screws...

They have a wafer head screw for plywood to steel framing...

If the loads on the fastener are not high (You mentioned this is a non structural application) look into some powder actuated fasteners that have recently come on the market.  The shanks of the fasteners are knurled so that they grab the light gauge when driven through it.  Can't remener a trade name off hand.

Hi We have just been fixing 38mm chipboard to thin wall structural steel profiles with a tek screw.
These were 55 or 60mm long with a couple of snap off ears just behind the self tapping point, with a cross head csk head to the fixing.
Method attach the screw to the tool in the drill chuck
and drill into the timber. The ears cut a clearance hole thro' the chipboard and the drill bit on the end will cut ahole in the steel. keep drilling and ears will break off allowing the fixing to self tap the steel and pull it all together. Hope this helps

RE: Wood to steel deck fastener

I have fixed floor boards to steel joists in the past and used the fasteners suggested by roadkingreggae. Try looking on http://www.itwbuildex.com/

RE: Wood to steel deck fastener

Any TEK screw would do the job. Make sure you have one that is long enough to go through the plywood and have several threads go through the steel deck. They are self tapping and drilling type. There is nothing magical about them. Hilti and many other companies such as roofing companies use them to fasten their insulation to the deck.

Good luck

RE: Wood to steel deck fastener

Some TEK screws are specifically designed for fastening timber to steel. They are usually the Wing Tek type. But his type is probably available from many suppliers

RE: Wood to steel deck fastener

Grabber makes screws specifically designed for attaching wood to light gauge steel, among other manufacturers.  It's a self-drlling bugle-head screw that comes in #6-#8 in various lengths in the catalog I have in my office.  They may have other options as well, this isn't the newest catalog.
