What happened to nano emissive displays?

What happened to nano emissive displays?

What happened to nano emissive displays?

(OP)
About a year ago, the nano emissive display got quite a bit of press.

In case you didn't hear, Motorola found a way to grow aligned nano-tubes on a substrate at relatively low temperatures.  These tubes can be used as millions of tiny electron guns, firing at phosphers like a tube TV.  The long and the short of it is they hoped to bring a flat panel plasma-like TV to the market for the cost of a tube TV.  They said they may even be able to start in a year.

Well, that was a year ago, and while I didn't expect these things to be in production already, I'm very suprised that i haven't even HEARD anything about them for quite some time.  Does anybody know what is up with these things?

RE: What happened to nano emissive displays?

I read in a recent copy of Electronics News that a Japanese company is putting that design into high volume production (can't remember who though).

RE: What happened to nano emissive displays?

Blur,

Progress on Nano Emissive Displays is ongoing. In fact, in the original article I saw in in 2003 (in EETimes if I remember correctly...), they were quoting a screen of about 1" in thickness. Since then, they have described it in several articles I've read as a 1/2" thick screen. How's that for "sexy"?

One recent article I read was in BusinessWeek (June 2004) and it indicates that Samsung is the first company to license the technology and it should debut in 2006. So it's taking a bit longer than Motorola originally expected to get it to market, but how surprising is that? ;)

I know I've read about the technology in more recent articles, but this is the only one I have a link to:

http://businessweek.com/technology/content/jun2004...

The paragraph about nano emissive displays is a bit more than 1/2 way down.

I think that FED "Field Emissive Display" is another term to describe this technology.  A search with this name will also yield several interesting results.

There is a company called Nano Proprietary Inc. whose subsidiary Applied Nanotech is developing the "Nano Emissive Display".  If you go to their website you can view a demonstration of the 2 prototype NEDs (black and white, and color).  They aren't very impressive because they are prototypes but the specs. look very promising.
