Translating iges into solidworks please please help

Translating iges into solidworks please please help

(OP)
Hey everyone,

I have an .iges file which was created origionally in Desktop 6.  I am trying to bring this file into solidworks 2004 sp4.2   Graphically the file translates nicely, however it is not scaled properly.  Everything is 25.4 times to big no matter if i bring it into a imperial or metric template.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciate.

Thanks in advance to all who respond.

-James

ps - there is way to many parts to have to scale all of the files once in solidworks.

RE: Translating iges into solidworks please please help

You write it is 25.4 too big (conversion factor in/mm). Seems like to me that the file was created in millimeters. Try have the creater of the file save it in inches then resend in iges.

Isn't Desktop unitless though?  Should I be able to specify what I want the untis to be when translating into solidworks?

I see that the file was created in with the intent of it being in mm but I need solidworks to recognize this.

RE: Translating iges into solidworks please please help

The units are embedded into the IGES file.

But if you look at the Options button (Located in the Open Menu) you get the options

Unit:
File Specified unit
Document template specified unit

So if that's the case you a specific Document template for opening these IGES files.

RE: Translating iges into solidworks please please help

I have run into a similar situation in the past.  A firm that was doing some work for us was using desktop.  All of their files came in scaled.  I ended up just remodelling them (We wanted the luxury of the feature tree).  I believe ctopher is correct.  The file will need to be exported differently to correct this problem.

Scott,

I tried creating a specific template just for the purpose of translation and no luck.  When it translated, the file did come in with the default units being in mm but it was still 25.4 times to big.
Unless i'm creating the template wrong, to do that i just opened my existing inch template and went tool options document properties units and switched that to mm then i save that template under a new file and and used it in the translation.  Was this the right method?

Thanks for the help, very appreciated.

Thanks for the input Shaggy18VW, I was worried that this might be my only option.  I just wanted to make sure there was absolutely nothing I could do before I went back to the customer.
Thanks again

It's an assemly file, and there's to many parts to have to go and scale them all. :(

Jamaz17, did you ever get resolution on this problem?  I have the same issue importing an IGES into SW from a program called truespace.  The parts are 1000x too big.  I have also changed the units in the template but this did not help.  Thanks,
