Press Fit

(OP)
I am trying to calculate the induced compressive stress due to a dowel pin being press fit into a plate.  I know that it has to do with the relationship between the different E values but am having some difficulty with translating this into an equation that will give me the stress.  Thanks in advance.

RE: Press Fit

Look in the Machinery's Handbook under "Allowances and Tolerances for Fits "section (about pp 637-638 for 25th ed).

Hi Creigbm

Have a look at Thread404-42504 I have posted in there all
the formula you require.

RE: Press Fit

This has been discussed before, DesertFox has pointed the way.  Essentially you need to redevelop the hoop stress equation for Pressure Vessel Theory.  That also has been discussed in the past.

Your problem has many built in solutions which may be found in various websites.  I saw one in University of Tennessee, Mechanical Engineering Course 473 for Machine Design.  UncleSyd gave the address in the thread linked as M6X20 (MM) Screw Physical Properties.

Look under the link: http://www.utm.edu/departments/engin/lemaster.&nbs... is perhaps the best website I have ever had the pleasure to surf.  If it suits your application, the gold star goes to UncleSyd!
