Does anybody know of a reliable method of temp. monitoring in a cast iron furnace that does not involve using a one shot thermocouple?Temperatures up to 1600 degrees C.

What about an optical pyrometer?

Infrared systems, both pyrometers and cameras have been used, I believe.  

Ray Peacock of Temperatures.com has published more than one paper on the subject.
