Portable Generator Question

Portable Generator Question

Portable Generator Question

(OP)
I have a 3.5ton HVAC unit (42000BTU) How much equivalent minimum generator do I need (KW or HP)to keep AC running with power out due to hurricane season in Florida. Getting ready for Hurricane IVAN and others

RE: Portable Generator Question

I suggest you post this in one of the Electric Engineering forums to get the most effective respones.  Also, post all of the electrical information for the unit: Motor sizes, volts, amps, single or three phase, etc.  I suspect the problem you will have is the current required during the startup of the motors.

RE: Portable Generator Question

You need about 13/14 kw/hr or about 6 hp. This takes into consideration the compressor, supply fan motor and the condenser fan motor.
