I am wondering if bridge engineers out in Cyberland use HDPE for slip pads at beam bearings for trail bridges for foot traffic or snowmobile traffic.  If not, what is used.

I have not tried HDPE, but have used metal-backed Teflon for expansion slide bearings for elevated walkways at industrial sites. Here is a link to a typical brand:
