(OP)
Hello all,
I am somewhat of a newcomer to the circuits world. I have a good understanding of electronics and theory, but absolutely no experience with layout. Does anyone have a suggestion for standards, textbooks, online courses , etc., at which I can pick up some of the fundamental layout rules? Thanks in advance!

Check out the folling web sites for a wealth of information on board design:

For standards go to www.ipc.org
Their 2000 series is the standard for designing boards
(IPC-2221A, IPC-2222...), also see IPC-D-325A & IPC-2615 for documation.
