Heat treatment of UNS S17400

Heat treatment of UNS S17400

Heat treatment of UNS S17400

(OP)
Is there a published standard tolerance on the precipitation hardening temperature for this material?  For example, the condition H1150 aging temperature is (of course) 1150°F, but is that ±25°F, ±15°F or what?  I've seen anywhere from ±1°F to ±50°F in manufacturers' literature.  ASME SA-564 states that these are "... suggested temperatures and may be varied to obtain required tensile properties."  I'm trying to develope an internal standard and would like a something definitive to base it on.

RE: Heat treatment of UNS S17400

SAE AMS 2759/3 is now at revision C, not B, but the limits are the same as EdStainless described: when the furnace temperature is less than 1300 F, the tolerance is + 10 F (+ 6C).

RE: Heat treatment of UNS S17400

It is hard to generalize the aging process for 17/4.

Based on the hardness range you will get when you age 17/4 we have never found it necessary to hold the temperature closer than ±25°F when we called out a age hardening procedure for outside work.
Be careful of people that don't have a circulating oven for the aging process.

If you are going to use 17/4 as a shaft the aging temperature needs to be at or above H1100. H1100 was our minimum aging treatment unless there was a review of the component by our group.  If you can stay away from the H900 treatment. I seen a lot of grief come from trying to use 17/4 in this condition.

Could you give a little more information on what type components you are considering.
