Hazardous Area Junction Boxes

Hazardous Area Junction Boxes

Hazardous Area Junction Boxes

(OP)
Where an area is classified as Cl 1, Zone 2, do the junction boxes that have only terminals need to have a certification rating on the box?

Will the box be any different than a box in the same service in an unclassified area, except that perhaps the manufacturer may omit the label indicating that the box is certified for use in that area?

Any references or web URL's would be appreciated.

Any help, thanks in advance...

Ken

Ken,
See 501.4(B)(4)in the National Electrical Code.  In general junction or pull boxes in Class I, Division 2 areas are not required to be explosionproof.

resqcapt19 is correct.  No certification is required for terminal strips in a zone 2 enclosuere.  Consider a weather-tight classification if outdoors and corrosion rating if in a typical plant.

RE: Hazardous Area Junction Boxes

In Div 2 areas, sparking devices are of concern.  That means that things like switches must be XP & sealed.  But most other things (splices, motors, transformers) etc don't require the seal -- so long as they don't have overload devices or brushes or similar arcing type devices incorporated into them.
