Timber truss connection to Steel beam

Timber truss connection to Steel beam

Timber truss connection to Steel beam

(OP)
I am working on a project that involves heavy timber trusses bearing on a steel beam.  I have been told that a steel shoe type connection would work best here.  Does anyone know of any manufactures of this type of connection or know of any guides to design this connection?

RE: Timber truss connection to Steel beam

I know of no manufacturer that has a standard connection. This would require a custom design by you.

Consider attaching (Bolts or power shot) pressure treated planks to the steal beam to make attachment easier.

Simpson does custom connections for timber framing.  I am not sure if they design or if they just fabricate.

Consult with some glulam suppliers in your area.  If it is a longer span over 30', the truss itself is probably going to have a steel shoe at the end.  If the truss bears on a beam it is common to weld the truss shoe directly to the beam flange.  If you check the AITC Timber Construction Manual for an example of a truss heel connection you should be able to visualize how it could be done.

The trick is to use angles on the side of the tension plates or widen the bearing plate under the truss heel so that you get the weld away from the wood so you don't scorch the wood.

Weld prefabricated connectors with care.  If they are heat treated it will effect the stregth.
