I'm looking for a short course to provide me with a better understanding of HV Substation design & HV distribution.

Kefax (IEE Endorsed Provider) in Mansfield do the following......Distribution System Design & Planning 5 day course.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

It's a difficult task, believe me. Try to find ABB Switchgear manual, 10th edition - there is an excellent description of the basic idea.
