Document numbering system for projects.

Document numbering system for projects.

Document numbering system for projects.

(OP)
Is there a standard for document numbering?
PFD's / P&ID's / DataSheets / Hookups / Layout Plans / Outline Drawings / etc etc

The document numbering system we currently use is not as "modern" as it should be.

Example:
Doc No.: OUDV-12345-001

OUDV = Document Type
12345 = Sequential Number
001 = Revision Number

The problem is, that this document doesn't has any link to the project. (There is no Project - ID)

I guess that most companies includes a project ID into their document number.

Example:

CA.065871.P1.123

CA = Country code (China)
065871 = Job Number (Project ID)
A = Document Type (P&ID)
1 = Document Classification (Final Documentation for customer)
123 = Sequential Number

This was an idea we had for a new numbering system. It would be very interesting for me to see other examples.

RE: Document numbering system for projects.

Every company has their own way of part numbering. Whatever works for you. I say keep it as simple as possible. If you follow ANSI/ASME/etc standards, drawings have most of the info on them anyway.
