Suggestions for way to combine PLC,drive, interface into cleaner packag

Suggestions for way to combine PLC,drive, interface into cleaner packag

(OP)
I've recently built a machine that requires one stepper axis, has approx. 10 inputs and 12 outputs, and a display with at least 4 lines. The temporary solution was to use a maple systems interface with a compumotor zeta 6104 single axis stepper drive and an Allen Bradley micrologix PLC. This however is very cumbersome to communicate between the PLC and stepper drive (I could only communicate using the I/O lines). I'm looking for a good way to combine this into a cleaner package. I do not have much room for a large interface, but did look at the possibility of a CTC P1 interface that has the capability to add a PC104 card for the motion. However, it looks as if the I/O on the PC104 card may not be enough.

Any other suggestions of intelligent interfaces or other setups that you've used that could handle this task without taking up too much space?

shuan,
Although the micrologix platform is very low cost. The SLC5 offerings have a Stepper
Motor module that could address your concerns rather nicely. You can go to the Rockwell Allen Bradley site and investigate publication downloads area for 1747-HSTP1 user or product data for more information.

I just finished a similar project using a PC interfaced by the printer port.

The program was BASIC , debugged with interpreter and finally compiled. It runs in DOS , controls 3 steppers.

shaun,
Our site has about 12 of the systems you are considering. Ours are mitsubishi AD71 series. Now I,m sure Omron (as do most of the major players) also supports a "motion control" system. I suggest you consider ditching the piece meal this system with that motor and controller.
The mitsubishi system uses a combination of hard wire for the safety stuf. internal relays and registers for the softer parts and all this in your normal programing format.
The other major brands do the same thing. Chase down your local rep and annoy the heck out of him (them)
  It is worth the look
all the best
